Annual Poweshiek County Democrats Pasta Supper

May 7, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Poweshiek County Democratic Party will hold its annual Pasta Supper on Sunday, May 7 at the First Presbyterian Church (1025 Fifth Avenue) in Grinnell from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Democrats will discuss party-building efforts with Liz Bennett, an Iowa House representative from Cedar Rapids; John Norris, an Iowa Democratic Party leader for 40 years and a potential candidate for governor in 2018; and Courtney Rowe, a Cedar Rapids Democratic Party organizer who has declared her intention to run against Rep. Rod Blum in Iowa’s U.S. House First District.

Bennett, an assistant leader in the Iowa House Democratic Caucus, will deliver the keynote address at 6 p.m. on Iowa’s momentous 2017 legislative session, where Republican-led majorities passed laws dramatically limiting workers’ rights, women’s access to health care, and public school funding.

Norris, whose four decades in Iowa Democratic politics spans involvement in the Farm Aid movement in the 1980s to service as Iowa Governor and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack’s chief of staff in the 2000s, will speak with Democratic activists as part of his tour through the state in advance of a potential run for governor in 2018.

Rowe, one of two declared Democratic candidates for the Iowa U.S. House seat in the First District, is a Linn County Democratic Central Committee member. A veteran of several local and national political campaigns, she was a member of the Iowa delegation to the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
